Scaffold inspections

When should you inspect scaffold?

Some quick questions for you:

  • Would you put your kids in a 10 year old car without a valid MOT?

  • Do you have a client who wants work to be stopped on their job for safety breaches?

  • Do you have a spare £100k to pay your fines?

When building a scaffold it is important to think about scaffolding inspection. Lots of scaffolding companies do not include this in their quote for work. It is usually left up to the client or principal contractor to make sure the scaffolding safety inspection is carried out.

When should I carry out a scaffolding safety inspection?

HSE Scaffold inspection requirements tell us that you should perform a scaffold inspections on some very specific occasions, such as:

  • After building scaffold (installation) on your project

  • At least once per week (every 7 days) after initial inspection

  • After an event that may have damaged the scaffold (bad weather, struck with vehicle, etc.)

Who can carry out scaffold inspections?

Only a competent person should carry out scaffold inspections.

A person who has been trained, has the right knowledge and experience to carry out a task is what is meant by a competent person.

Examples of a competent person may include someone with a CISRS scaffold inspection card.
